Pokhara Airport Transfer: Cost, Cars, and How It Works

Pokhara airport transfer cost, how the private car pickup works, and car vs van for the short drive from PKR to your hotel in Pokhara.

A private car with a driver, the kind used for a Pokhara airport transfer into the city

A Pokhara airport transfer covers one of the shortest airport runs in Nepal, a straight drive of fifteen to twenty five minutes from Pokhara International Airport into Lakeside or wherever else in the valley you are staying. The appeal is less the distance and more the certainty: a driver who already has your flight number, a name board waiting in arrivals, and a price agreed before you land, rather than a negotiation at the taxi rank after a long flight.

Where the airport is and how far the drive is

Pokhara International Airport (PKR) opened in January 2023, replacing the old domestic strip with a proper terminal a short way outside the town centre. From there it is roughly 3 to 4 kilometres to the Lakeside hotels, and a little further to guesthouses on the edges of the valley, so most transfers run 15 to 25 minutes door to door. Compared with Kathmandu, where a transfer from the airport into the city can take an hour in traffic, Pokhara's drive is short enough that it barely counts as a leg of the journey.

What a Pokhara airport transfer costs

A private car for the transfer starts from around 45 US dollars, the same floor as our standard car rental in Pokhara rate, because an airport run is priced as a fixed route rather than a full day. A tourist van, for a family or a group travelling with more bags, starts from around 85. Both prices are for the vehicle and driver together, fuel included, agreed before you travel so there is nothing to work out at the airport itself.

The alternative is a taxi picked up on arrival. Airport taxis in Pokhara do not run on a meter. The fare gets negotiated at the rank, and without some idea of the going rate it is easy to overpay on the first trip of a holiday, tired and unfamiliar with the currency. A transfer booked ahead removes that entirely. You get one price, settled in advance, and there is no bargaining left to do after a long flight.

Car or van

For one to three travellers with normal luggage, a private car is the sensible choice and the cheaper one. Once a group passes four, or the bags start to outnumber the seats, the tourist van is the better fit, since it keeps a family or a small group together in one vehicle instead of splitting across two cars. Both options are covered on the vehicle hire page if you want the fuller comparison, including the SUV for a group that wants more room without the size of a van.

How the pickup works

Your driver waits in the arrivals area with a board showing your name, so there is no separate meeting point to find, and you do not have to walk out to a car park. We track your flight, so an early landing or a delay does not leave anyone standing around and does not add to the price. From the terminal it is a short walk to the car, and from there straight to your hotel.

Departures work the same way in reverse. The driver collects you from your hotel timed to your flight, with enough margin built in for check-in, and drops you at the terminal. If your plans shift and your flight time changes, tell us and we move the pickup with it.

Early and late arrivals

Nepal's domestic flights lean toward the morning. Cloud tends to build over the hills by early afternoon, so airlines schedule most Kathmandu to Pokhara services before midday and the timetable thins out as the day goes on. If you are connecting on to Pokhara the same day you land in Kathmandu, book the earliest realistic flight rather than counting on an afternoon slot holding. International and regional arrivals into Pokhara itself keep more ordinary hours, and a transfer waiting for a delayed evening flight costs the same as one for a midday arrival, since the price is fixed whenever you land.

Booking ahead versus arranging it on the ground

It is possible to walk out of the terminal and find a taxi on the spot, and plenty of travellers do. The trade-off is the one above. You have no fixed price until you have haggled for it, and no guarantee the driver knows anything about where you are staying beyond the name of the neighbourhood. Booking the transfer ahead of arrival costs the same or less than a reasonable negotiated fare, and it removes the one piece of logistics most likely to go wrong on the first hour of a trip.

If you are landing in Kathmandu first

Most international flights into Nepal land in Kathmandu, not Pokhara, so a lot of travellers arrive there first and continue on by air or by road. The domestic hop from Kathmandu to Pokhara takes about 25 minutes by air, with several flights a day on the main carriers, and lands you back at the same Pokhara terminal this transfer covers. If you would rather see the country between the two cities than fly over it, our Pokhara to Kathmandu route runs the same journey by private car, a full day on the road instead of a half hour flight.

Once you land

A transfer is the start of the trip, not the whole of it. Most visitors land, settle into a hotel around the lake, and use the next day or two to see the valley before heading out to the mountains. Our two days in Pokhara guide lays out a well-paced way to spend that time, from a Sarangkot sunrise to the quieter Begnas Lake, and the same driver who meets you at the airport can carry straight on into that itinerary if you would rather not switch vehicles partway through.

FAQ

How much is a Pokhara airport transfer?

A private car for the transfer starts from around 45 US dollars, the same floor as our standard car rate, since the run is quoted as a fixed price for the route rather than a day. A tourist van for a family or a group with more luggage starts from around 85. We confirm the exact figure for your dates before you book.

Where do I meet my driver at Pokhara airport?

In the arrivals area, just past the exit doors, where your driver waits with a board showing your name. There is no separate pickup zone to find, and you do not need to walk out to a car park.

How far is Pokhara airport from Lakeside?

About 3 to 4 kilometres, a drive of 15 to 25 minutes depending on traffic through town. It is one of the shortest airport-to-hotel runs of any airport in Nepal.

Is it better to book a transfer in advance or find a taxi at the airport?

Book ahead. Airport taxis in Pokhara do not run on a meter, so the fare is negotiated on the spot, and a pre-booked private transfer is a fixed price agreed before you land, with a driver who is already tracking your flight.
