Carved Newari brick and timber facade in Tansen

Tansen and Palpa Heritage

A Newari hill town on the old road south, off the tourist map.

Tansen sits on a ridge above the Kali Gandaki, halfway between Pokhara and the plains, an old trading town of steep lanes, carved Newari houses, and metalworkers still hammering by hand. Almost no tourists come, which is much of its charm.

Below the town, the Rani Mahal is a European-style palace built on a river bend in the 1890s, the 'Taj Mahal of Nepal', reached on a walk down through the gorge. Srinagar hill above town gives the whole Himalayan skyline at dawn.

Highlights
  • Newari old town and bazaar
  • The Rani Mahal river palace
  • Srinagar hill sunrise
  • Traditional dhaka weaving and metalwork

Good to know
Is there much to do in Tansen?+

It is a slow, atmospheric town rather than a checklist of sights. The pleasure is the lanes, the crafts, the Rani Mahal walk, and the mountain sunrise.

How hard is the Rani Mahal walk?+

A steady descent to the river and back up, around two to three hours in total. We keep an easy pace.
